GSC 268:  Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology

Subject Area Social Sciences
History
Term from 2007 to 2019
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 50315326

The Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology is a joint institution of the Department of History and the Department of Sociology at Bielefeld University. Both departments enjoy an outstanding reputation nationally and internationally, and both cooperate closely in research and teaching, including collaboration in three Research Training Groups, one Collaborative Research Centre, and one master's programme.
The graduate school aims first at launching an interdisciplinary research environment that not only is conducive to research projects transcending disciplinary limitations but also will increase the ability of doctoral students to reflect on the disciplinary formation and historical genesis of disciplinary theories and methods.
The second aim of the graduate school is to intensify the international character of its doctoral community. It will therefore endorse the recruitment of young scholars from abroad; at the same time, domestic students will be prepared and expected to apply for study and research stays abroad, to attend international conferences, and to publish in international journals.
The graduate school also seeks to enhance professional orientation. Doctoral students will be supported in developing general and transferable soft skills, preparing them for a range of career options within and outside academia.
In order to achieve these objectives, the graduate school will be comprehensive in design: it will integrate research on a broad variety of topics and provide an inspiring research environment for a diverse group of about 160 doctoral students. Further characteristics of the school are a highly competitive selection procedure, professional management, individualised study plans, flexible and individually designed supervision and mentoring concepts, a structured academic study programme in a lively research community, the promotion of general skills and professional orientation, and a socio-cultural community and support programme that takes gender-related issues as well as the specific needs of international students into account.
After three years the graduate school will commission an evaluation to assess its achievements and to adapt its organisational structure to new academic challenges in a timely way.
