The variable DC supply to be used as source as well as as drain which is applied for here, is of great importance for a broad range of research projects at IAL. The system consists of the following main components: - bi-directional supply-side inverter, - different parallel DC/DC units for voltage and power adjustment and additional indispensable components of the overall system as power distribution, protection devices, contactors, switches, terminal boxes, cooling units, DC connectors and control panels. The system applied for is a variable and modular DC supply for high performance drive systems, which can be used in a flexible way for different research projects on electrical machines and drive systems at IAL. The research focus of IAL's electrical machines' research group is, besides design methods for electrical machines and the related temperature and cooling management, on analysis and prediction methods for important side effects as bearing voltages and currents, magnetically excited vibration and acoustic noise, and additional power losses. The system applied for shall be used for the research program described below. E.g., the experimental validation of prototype or research drive systems under realistic conditions requires a powerful and variable DC supply including mobile DC/DC controlers for the adjustment of the required DC voltage and the related auxiliary systems such as flexible power connection points or cooling units. Depending on the individual test set-up and the maturity of the device under test, this needs a fixed or an individually adjustable DC voltage for motor or for generator operation in order to meet the changing requirements for the drive system components with respect to voltage magnitude or voltage regulation. Due to the high power density of some innovative devices under test, an effective cooling system based on powerful conditioning of the cooling liquid for the different drive system components must be an integral part of the supply and test system.Besides being used for different stationary or mobile drive systems, the system applied for shall meet the requirements of all or at least most applications requiring a powerful DC supply. Using this variable and bidirectional DC supply, it will be possible to cover what the experimental validation of high power drive systems asks for in the future. Thus, the system applied for will contribute significantly to the knowledge gain in different current and future research projects at the institute for drive systems and power electronics.
