Two-dimensional Janus materials represent a significant innovation among 2D materials. By breaking the mirror symmetry, the electronic properties of the constituent 2D materials are significantly changed, making them extremely interesting for both fundamental research and many applications. To date, however, only very few Janus 2D materials have been fabricated and experimental data on their properties is thus scarce. This project aims to contribute significantly to the progress in this novel field by expanding the number of available Janus 2D materials, developing fabrication methods for heterostructures of high-quality Janus monolayers, characterizing and controlling their physical properties, and substantially expanding the knowledge of structure-function relationships in this class of materials.
