Fault-injection and side-channel analysis tools and training

Subject Area Computer Science
Term Funded in 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 499421779

The subject of this application is a fault-injection system for micro and nanoelectronic circuits and systems. Fault injections constitute an important class of so-called physical attacks, which threaten cryptographic and other security-critical components and have found a stronger consideration in both the scientific community and the industrial practice over the last years. They are a research focus of the Institute for Computer Engineering and Computer Architecture (Institut für Technische Informatik) since Professor Polian has taken over the Professorship for Hardware-oriented Computer Science. These attacks are central within the recently approved Priority Program SPP 2253 Nano Security, which is coordinated by Professor Polian. The proposed system is the only one on the market that offers high-precision optical (laser) and electromagnetic injections in combination with a suitable evaluation and analysis software. Through this system, we would be able to support theoretical results especially on protection methods against high-precision fault attacks by practical experiments with the highest precision that can be achieved today. It would also open up new research fields for us. It can be used in ongoing, submitted and planned projects. A suitable lab to accommodate the system is available.
