Together with adipocytes, adipose tissue macrophages (ATM) are a substantial component of adipose tissue. Here, beside their classical immune function, they uptake and process lipids therefore contributing to lipid metabolism. However, their functional relevance for thermogenic fat is poorly understood. In this project we aim to unravel the role of ATM lipid uptake and processing during activation of thermogenic fat. In particular, we will dissect ATM immune and metabolic function as well as the impact of ATM on adipocyte thermogenic function and on systemic energy metabolism.
