In this project, we will to look beyond the conventional processing techniques and use precursors with high defect population for stabilizing tetragonal distortions in bulk Fe-based alloys. We aim to understand the impact of defects as well as alloying on the possibility to increase solubility of light interstitial elements for stabilizing tetragonal distortions. The long-term goal is to understand how and why the physical and chemical properties of iron are altered by the induced tetragonality and how this can be exploited in development of novel functional materials.
