Compact high performance photon pair source using ultrafast hybrid modulators based on CMOS and LNOI (C11*)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2022 to 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 231447078

Project Description

The project aims to study and demonstrate miniaturized sources of decorrelated photon pairs with high repetition rate. The goal will be achieved by jointly integrating high-bandwidth electro-optic modulators, and a specifically tailored parametric down-conversion (PDC) section, both in a lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) platform. To obtain decorrelated states the PDC will be pumped with ultrabroadband optical pulses with tailored pulse shapes, tunable bandwidth, and repetition rate generated by means of a novel optical frequency comb synthesis technique. Ultrafast electronics will be integrated in a CMOS chip. Using LNOI and CMOS chips an ultra-compact photon pair source will be demonstrated.
