Control of excitonic optical harmonic generation by electric fields (A11*)

Subject Area Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
Term from 2022 to 2025
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 231447078

Project Description

In this combined experimental and theoretical project, we will investigate two-dimensional excitons in semiconductor quantum well structures and 2D materials addressed by optical harmonic generation and controlled by electric fields. DC electric and THz fields will be applied in order to relax the selection rules of optical transitions and enhance optical harmonics generation. First-principles DFT calculations will be used to rationalize the experimental data. Our study will thus give important tuning knobs for tailoring the exciton resonances, their symmetries, dynamics and respective optical nonlinearities, which are the major key quantities for an improved design of future devices.
