Monolayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDCs) exhibit very high exciton binding energies of several hundred meV and extraordinarily strong optical nonlinearities. Stacking several monolayers allows one to tailor these properties by the choice of materials and their relative orientation. We will explore and manipulate such samples by using strong terahertz and mid-infrared fields in a collaborative work including fabrication, spectroscopy, and theory. TMDCs biased by atomically strong optical fields will be investigated with subcycle temporal resolution to probe non-perturbative nonlinear dynamics, such as giant Stark shifts, field-induced symmetry breaking, and intraexcitonic carrier-wave Rabi flopping.
