Scientific computing has established itself at the University of Oldenburg in recent years as a third pillar in the scientific landscape alongside theory and experiment, and scientific computing forms an interdisciplinary cross-cutting activity for many working groups, including those from the natural sciences, life sciences, and computer science. An adequate supply of high-quality parallel computing power is essential for many computationally intensive research projects. To meet this demand, researchers at Oldenburg University have access to a centrally operated high-performance compute cluster. The current system was procured in 2016 and can therefore hardly meet the current needs of users in terms of its technical status. It will also not be possible to cover the increasing demand for computing power in the future. The system applied for in this proposal is therefore intended to replace the supercomputer currently in use.As before, the new high-performance compute cluster will be used for research projects in the fields of theoretical chemistry and molecular chemistry (usage share 30%), machine learning (20%), fluid mechanics (20%), statistical methods (15%) and bioinformatics (10%). For this purpose, a broad spectrum of applications with different hardware requirements must be mapped on a corresponding, heterogeneous state-of-the-art supercomputing system.
