In project S06, we will explore novel routes for the efficient and non-destructive laser desorption of health- and climate relevant molecules from the surface of aerosol samples and from individual (nano-)particles for their detection using mass spectrometry. The program follows a systematic approach, starting with simple nanostructures and deposited spheres, stepwise increasing the target's complexity towards real-world aerosols in a particle beam. For each step, experiments and theoretical activities are complementarily designed to provide a detailed physical picture and maximum control of the underlying processes with the aim of non-destructive and efficient desorption and ionization in aerosol mass spectrometry.
