Project Description

In project S03, we will characterize and actively manipulate the sub-cycle dynamics of strong-field ionization and plasma formation near the surface of wide-bandgap dielectric solids via intense waveform controlled laser pulses. We will implement low-order harmonic interferometry as a new all-optical experimental protocol to characterize strong-field ionization. Combined with advanced self-consistent simulations of the field propagation and the nonlinear plasma dynamics, we will explore protocols to shape laser-induced modifications via waveform control of the sub-cycle ionization and excitation dynamics in standing waves.
