NOx reduction by H2 on Pt and Pd catalysts in O2-rich exhaust gases

Subject Area Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering
Term since 2022
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 491834613

The theme of the planned project lies in the catalytic low-temperature NOx reduction by H2 on Pt and Pd catalysts in lean combustion exhaust gases. Compared to the established denitrification techniques, the H2-deNOx conversion has the advantage of high conversion rates even below 200 ° C. The intended research addresses the following points:- Detailed molecular understanding of the H2-deNOx reaction to control H2-deNOx activity and N2 selectivity using Pt and Pd catalysts combined with the acidic supports CeO2, TiO2, ZrO2 and Al2O3-SiO2 as well as the promoters WOx, SOx and POx.- Understanding the influence of promoters and supports on the structural and electronic properties of the active component .- Knowledge of the molecular reaction mechanism, in particular clarification of the mechanistic role of support and promoter, especially by using in situ analysis techniques with focus on X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy.- Rational improvement of the Pt and Pd catalysts based on the developed understanding of the reaction mechanism and the effects of promoter and support.- Technical evaluation of the most promising catalysts for stationary and mobile lean-burn engines (CH4, H2 and diesel engines).
