Religion and criticism of religion. A theory of the dynamics of religious development on the basis of the philosophy of Ernst Cassirer

Subject Area Roman Catholic Theology
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 490996084

In my research project I want to explicate Ernst Cassirers philosophy of religion and elaborate its potential concerning current debates in philosophy and theology. Cassirer approach towards religion seems especially interesting for three main reasons. First, he isn't focusing on religion as an isolated phenomenon but situates it within his detailed epistemological and anthropological deliberations. Second, Cassirer isn't thinking of religions as static but captures a certain dynamic of their development. Third, Cassirer argues that criticism of mythical thinking lies at the heart of religion itself. This aspect is of special interest since it's neglected in many current debates that a form of rational, reflected criticism isn't just something that religions are confronted with. It is according to Cassirer deeply rooted in religion itself.
