Meiosis is a key step in reproduction during which homologous recombination not only ensures genome stability (DNA repair, correct segregation of the homologous chromosomes in gametes) but also promotes genetic diversity (generation of new allelic combinations). Already many years ago, it was recognized that meiotic chromosomes are highly mobile and their movements have been implicated in recombination. However, due to the lack of appropriate imaging set up, little is known about chromosome dynamics. In their preparatory work, the partners of this initiative have established a system to follow Arabidopsis thaliana chromosomes in real time. In addition, this consortium unites researchers experienced in quantitative image analysis and modeling next to experts in meiotic recombination and cytogenetics studies. Combining these expertises will allow us to describe chromosome dynamics in meiosis with unprecedented resolution and assess its importance for recombination.
