Final Report Abstract

A range of instruments has been adapted or developed for use on the HALO research aircraft. Among those are aerosol instruments, droplets and ice probes, ice nucleation instruments and instruments to measure water vapor concentrations. Some of these methods have been specially developed within the SPP 1294 “Atmospheric and Earth system research with the High Altitude and Long Range Research Aircraft”, others have been adapted to aircraft needs. As the operation of instruments during research flights has to meet special requirements such as mostly automated operation and operation in high altitude or at high flow rates, a preflight performance testing and data comparison with established methods is highly recommended. Within the project "Test and intercomparison of water, aerosol, cloud droplet, ice particle, and ice nuclei instruments for the HALO aircraft using the AIDA facility (AIDA-HALO)" such preflight testing has been offered to the partners of the SPP. Here, the AIDA (Aerosol Interaction and Dynamics in the Atmosphere) cloud chamber was used to mimic temperatures, pressures and cloud conditions typically for HALO research flights. The teams developing and operating these aircraft instruments were given the opportunity to use the AIDA facility to test their instruments and to compare their measurements with other aircraft instruments or the established AIDA instrumentation for relative humidity and temperature as well as aerosol, droplet and ice crystal concentrations. The project activities have been organized in especially targeted campaigns, such as the HALO and RICE campaigns, or took place as part of other AIDA campaigns with both science and method objectives. Most of the campaigns organized within this project included interested external participants (own funding presumed). This not only strongly supported the development of high international standards of instrument operation and performance, but also provided excellent opportunities for young researchers to get familiar with and participate in the international scientific exchange. Highlights in this context are the ICIS-2007 campaign with follow-up workshops, the AquaVIT campaign and workshop series, and the ongoing Fifth international Ice Nucleation (FIN) workshop activities. The majority of instruments that participated AIDA measurements within the scope of this project have been successfully operated during the ML-CIRRUS and ACRIDICON flights.
