The project examines the mutual dependency between ruler and political elites in the Frankish-German realm from Carolingian times up to the 12th century especially addressing the tensions arising from the fact that members of the elite – both secular and ecclesiastic – participated in royal rule, e.g. as counsellors and at the same time could wield domination themselves, often in a regional context.
