The Institute of Materials and Joining Technology (IWF) at Otto-von-Guericke-University (OVGU) Magdeburg hereby applies for the funding of a new universal mechanical testing machine equipped with a high-temperature furnace for mechanical testing up to 1500 °C and non-contact strain measurement. The new equipment will complement the IWF's existing research infrastructure. The testing machine is required for a variety of research tasks, which are listed in more detail in the proposal. In particular, the mechanical behavior of metallic, intermetallic and ceramic structural materials and material composites in tension, compression and bending modes is to be investigated up to maximum temperatures of 1500 °C. Numerous research projects focus on materials for high-temperature applications (target temperatures of 1000 °C up to 1500 °C), e.g. refractory metal silicide materials and metal-ceramic composites. As these materials are prone to oxidation in the uncoated state, a fully equipped vacuum chamber is requested. The measurement of (creep) strain at very high temperatures is challenging and is to be realized contact-free by means of laser extensometers.
