The proposal for a STED microscope is based on the call for the professorship for Experimental Pharmacology for Natural Sciences at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and therefore, essentially supports the establishment of the newly formed research group. STED microscopy strengthens the methodological spectrum of the group. Especially, current and future projects related to RNA binding proteins in inflammatory and malignant diseases as well as pathomechanisms in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease will benefit from high-resolution microscopy. In addition, the planned acquisition will support the call for the professorship for Biopharmacy as well as other research groups of the Institute of Pharmacy, the Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, and the Medical Faculty. STED microscopy displays an excellent technique to study intracellular structures, protein complexes, binding of RNA to RNA bindings proteins and alterations of the respective structures. STED microscopy offers a resolution of <200 nm. As yet, such high-resolution microscopy is not available at the Martin Luther University. Thus, the planned STED microscope would strongly improve the infrastructure for imaging techniques at Martin Luther University.
