The biotechnological production of natural flavourings and their analysis represent a major focus of the research activities of the Institute of Food Chemistry and Food Biotechnology at the Justus Liebig University of Giessen. For an efficient and targeted execution of current and future research activities, an analytical instrument is required which enables the highly sensitive and selective trace analysis of volatile substances, mainly food ingredients, with simultaneous olfactometric detection. A gas chromatograph coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer and an olfactometric detector port is particularly suitable for this task. The equipment with a powerful automatic sampler, a thermodesorption unit, an option for solid phase microextraction as well as a module for dynamic headspace extraction enables state-of-the-art solvent-free sampling and injection techniques and guarantees the efficient utilization of the device.
