Novel rare-earth-based intermetallics as candidates for realization of the Shastry-Sutherland lattice

This project is aimed to explore the interplay between lattice geometry, rare-earth magnetism and conduction electrons in crystals of briefly reported Ce2Pt2Sn and novel Sm2Pt2Sn intermetallics and to use their chemical flexibility as a knob to navigate the magnetic phase diagram in search of “topological” textures.This requires an understanding of the chemistry of the Ce2Pt2Sn and Sm2Pt2Sn intermetallics, exploring their physical properties using state-of-the-art characterization techniques and methods that can characterize topological textures, understanding of the nature of the magnetic frustration via band structure calculations for different structural models and ground states of Ce2Pt2Sn and Sm2Pt2Sn and bridging them with experimental magnetic, thermal, transport, and ARPES measurements in cooperation with in-house partners to provide a testing ground for theoretical models of magnetism.
