Although surfaces are typically characterized with simple standardized roughness parameters (like e.g. Ra or Rz), to conclude on the state of the manufacturing process on the one hand and to predict the functional characteristics of the workpiece on the other hand, they have limited capabilities to describe the functional characteristics. Due to the calculation procedure and the accompanying loss of information, it is not always possible to compare different manufacturing processes or rather an interpretation of the results is often only meaningful with a priori knowledge about a constant and relatively stable manufacturing process. Thus, in the proposed project an alternative approach for the assessment of manufacturing processes is developed that is not based on roughness parameters. In doing so, a structure-oriented evaluation in the profile measurement context is extensively examined for the first time in order to establish general relations between the surface topography and the state of the manufacturing process.
