Pöpsel aims to unravel JARID1B-mediated regulation of cell state transitions by an integrative biochemical and structural approach. He will (1) structurally define substrate engagement and demethylase activity in the chromatin context using cryo-electron microscopy of JARID1B with an emphasis on its interactions with nucleosomes and (2) identify biochemical determinants of JARID1B interaction dynamics focusing on the mechanism of the recognition of the tumour suppressor retinoblastoma protein, a key mediator of JARID1B function. He will extend this expertise to other projects within the CRC.
