Term
Funded in 2022
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 460129001
The overall objective pursued with the acquisition of the 3D-FluoKin-System is to establish an interdisciplinary centre of excellence for motion analysis of living beings and the comparative biomechanics of humans and animals in Leipzig with the unique methodological expertise on site. The 3D-FluoKin-System will considerably increase the research performance on an internationally competitive level as well as the acquisition of third-party funding for the established network of veterinary medicine, medicine, sports science and information technology. The resulting co-operations will be intensified, interdisciplinary joint projects will be acquired in a leading role and new attractive co-operations will be realised nationally and internationally. The high standard of 3D-fluoroscopy that has been developed can still be raised considerably and its application can be extended to interdisciplinary questions and in particular to applications in humans. The 3D-FluoKin system is used for research projects dealing with the health, prevention and rehabilitation of diseases of the musculoskeletal system in animals and humans. Furthermore, studies on lifestyle, animal welfare and performance optimisation at the limits of athletic performance in sports and the optimisation of farm animal husbandry in accordance with animal welfare. The projects planned with the 3D-FluoKin-System are intended to strengthen and further network the research focus "MOVE/Motional Apparatus" of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and the profile areas "Modern Diseases" and "Mathematical and Computional Sciences" of the University. The graduate group Integrated Research in Biomechanics (InteReBio) offers and fosters a unique technical and professional cooperation between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Sports Science of the University of Leipzig and the Mathematical and Natural Sciences Centre of the HTWK Leipzig. The members of this group share the use and further development of the existing broad spectrum of modern and powerful methods for the analysis and optimisation of movements in living organisms. In addition to high-precision motion analysis using the X-ray unit of the 3D-FluoKin-System, the forward-looking goal of the group is to develop high-precision silhouette-based videometry, which artificially learns to improve existing motion analysis patterns by intelligently linking with data from the X-ray unit. The new 3d-FluoKin-System provides an innovative approach to comparative biomechanics of humans and animals with interdisciplinary applicability and considerable gain in knowledge. With the new acquisition, the expansion of the already initiated Central German competence centre for motion analysis, which is characterised by a very large growth and networking potential, can be advanced at the location Leipzig.
