Project Details
Liquid-Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS)
Subject Area
Medicine
Term
Funded in 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 460121171
The liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometer shall serve as a central research infrastructure of the University division of Pediatric Endocrinology of the Department of Pediatrics I in the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein in the new Quincke research building of the Christian Albrechts University of Kiel. The aim is to replace the technically outdated previous mass spectrometer which is not scientifically competitive anymore (reduced sensitivity and reduced specificity) and which suffers from increasingly frequent defects. There is a significant threat of final failure of the current old device due to limitted support by the company. The new device is mainly planned to measure steroid hormones, their precursors and metabolites in diverse biomaterials (steroid profiling, steroid metabolomics). This serves in local, national and international pediatric and pediatric endocrine research collaborations – e.g. as a reference core facility in projects – in basic science and clinical research on rare steroid synthesis disorders, disorders of sex development and obesity. In addition to the biochemical focus, accurate steroid determinations are needed for the characterization of cell cultures and pathways in projects of molecular endocrinology.
