LC-MS/MS for protein analytics part 2

Subject Area Microbiology, Virology and Immunology
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 456074016

With the opening of a second site at the TUM campus at the University hospital Klinikum rechts der Isar (in the following referred to as BayBioMS@MRI) the Technical University Munich (TUM) strengthens the Bavarian Center for Biomolecular Mass Spectrometry (BayBioMS) as central instrument platform for mass spectrometry in life science research. This expansion has become necessary due to the increased demand for mass spectrometry technology applications in cutting-edge international research. By building on synergies between different research departments we provide improved access to key research techniques for all scientists at TUM.Personnel and rooms for the BayBioMS@MRI have already been provided by the TUM. The aim of the current application is now to realize the BayBaMS@MRI major equipment infrastructure. In detail, the TUM intends to acquire two high resolution mass spectrometers with different measurement technique capabilities for proteomic research and one high resolution mass spectrometer for mass spectrometry based imaging applications. The proteomic mass spectrometers are coupled with nano-HPLC systems and a mobile MALDI imaging source. The combined application also contains an automated sample preparation system consisting of an off-line HPLC and a liquid handling platform as well as the necessary IT infrastructure for data storage, processing and analysis. Together these components form a functional unit and this concept has been used very successfully at the BayBioMS location in Freising for many years. The application is based on concrete research projects from 18 research groups. These projects are an example for the multitude of future projects that will be supported through this new infrastructure investment. Main goals of the BayBioMS@MRI are: 1. To offer access to state-of-the-art LC-MS and Imaging MS equipment in order to support cutting-edge research on the highest international level.2. To obtain high quality results by providing scientific and technical know-how, start-to-end projects support and the best possible advice for our users and collaboration partners. 3. To promote the education and scientific expertise of students, scientists and technical staff by giving seminars, workshops and courses for this modern key technology.4. To pursue our own innovative research projects in order to advance technical aspects like automation, sample preparation, measurement techniques or data analysis.5. And to foster the connection between the existing organization structure and scientific expertise at the BayBioMS at the TUM campus in Freising and the new site at the TUM clinic campus in Munich in order to take full advantage of all existing and planned resources and generate synergies.
