This theory project explores solid state hybrid systems based on magnetic dielectrics, where mechanical vibrations, light, and magnetic excitations are coupled. The collective character of the mechanical and magnetic excitations, together with the coupling enhancement and backaction effects brought about by using optical cavities, point to the possibility of designable and robust quantum cooperative effects at the mesoscopic scale. This project connects the by now well established field of optomechanics, where light couples to vibrational motion, with the novel field of optomagnonics, where photons couple coherently to magnons.
