Spatio-temporal correlations of electrons emitted from femtosecond laser-driven needle sources (A04)

Subject Area Optics, Quantum Optics and Physics of Atoms, Molecules and Plasmas
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 429529648

Individual electrons emitted by needle tips can be spatially fully coherent, even if they are emitted with femtosecond laser pulses. Based on this property, we aim to perform correlation experiments with electrons, perfectly controlled in 4D. For example, we expect to demonstrate quantum repulsion in a Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment with electrons from a single needle tip, and disentangle it from Coulomb repulsion effects. Furthermore, we will investigate spatial correlations of electrons emitted from more than one tip. Here we expect to perform the Hong-Ou-Mandel experiment for free electrons with two tips, and to measure higher order correlations from an emitter array.
