The University of Siegen (Institute of Biology) recently appointed the main applicant to establish a new research focus in the field of human and neurobiology. The main applicant's research projects focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases in particular on pathological RNA-protein interactions. The proposed confocal laser scanning microscope will not only make a significant contribution to the development of neurobiological research in Siegen, but also in the projects of the co-applicants. So far, there is no comparable system available at the University of Siegen. A central question in molecular and cell biological research is the subcellular localization or co-localization of proteins and nucleic acids as well as their intracellular transport in living cells. As described by the applicants in their projects, different proteins or nucleic acids will be studied with the proposed confocal laser scanning microscope. Main features of the proposed confocal laser scanning microscope are the equipment with an incubator for live cell imaging, high resolution and low bleaching of the samples.
