Multiquadrupole mass spectrometer

Subject Area Atmospheric Science, Oceanography and Climate Research
Term Funded in 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 454837693

Many ongoing and future research projects at the Institute for Chemistry and Biology of the Marine Environment of the University of Oldenburg focus on the understanding of biogeochemical processes, interactions between microbial activity and metal cycling, and element fluxes across interfaces in the marine environment. These projects strongly rely on the precise quantification of major and trace elements in various sample types including seawater, porewater, freshwater, marine sediments, particles, and rocks. The highly diverse and complex sample matrices, the partly ultra low concentration levels to be analyzed, and the high sample throughput require instrumentation capable of interference elimination, sensitive detection, and stable and reliable operation. For these purposes and requirements, a multiquadrupole mass spectrometer is the best choice. The planned instrument will replace the 14-year old sector-field mass spectrometer and complement existing instrumentation for inorganic geochemical analyses of the Central Marine-Chemical Analytics facility.
