Project Details
Structural characterization and dating of an active strike-slip fault that passes from bedrock into unconsolidated sediments
Subject Area
Palaeontology
Term
since 2021
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 453604198
The proposed project has two main aspects. One is to analyse a fault that passes from bedrock into unconsolidated sediments, and the related effects of fault zone geometry and internal fault structure. The second aspect is the methodical development for a) the visualisation of faults in different host materials based on GPR, and b) to improve direct fault-dating techniques using the luminescence approach. The project will utilise sandbox analogue models that will allow to analyse the transition from the bedrock into the unconsolidated sediments of the basin-fill. The study will deliver new insights into the lateral changes of the structure of a fault zone and the formation of splay faults. This is crucial for the generation of a holistic fault model and for a better understanding of fault development and the related seismic hazard potential.
