Project A01 explores electron transport at the atomic spatio-temporal scale. Metallic tunneling junctions are biased with single cycles of near-infrared light. Owing to the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics, currents are restricted largely to a fraction of the most prominent half-cycle in each pulse. In the next funding period, we will study the structural properties of our junctions and cover the parameter space for atomic-scale spatio-temporal transport in terms of gap size, barrier height and optical bias at low temperatures. Finally, we will work towards the detection of the full-counting statistics of tunneling electrons with single-electron transistor technology.
