Project Details
Peritoneal immune states link gut and liver pathology in cirrhosis (B07)
Subject Area
Gastroenterology
Term
since 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 403224013
Failure of intestinal barriers and immune dysfunction both contribute to the translocation of microbial products in patients with cirrhosis, which perpetuates inflammation, promotes infection, and accelerates organ failure. Resident peritoneal immune cells are repeatedly exposed to bacterial products, and their activation status is linked to complications. Project B07 will decipher aspects of human peritoneal immune dysfunction in the context of bacterial translocation and explore the consequences of therapeutic encapsulated fecal microbiota transplantation (eFMT) on gut microbiota composition, intestinal barrier function, and peritoneal immune activation in patients with cirrhosis.
