Nanoparticles find already today numerous applications in optical and electronic devices due to their unique size-dependent properties. In recent years, research in colloid and polymer science has targeted the step from individual nanoparticles to assembly into supra-colloidal structures, which can combine multiple nanoparticles of different composition in well-defined geometries. Thus, emergent properties, which go beyond those of the individual building blocks can be unlocked. However, the understanding of structure-function relations and - even more - the integration of these entities within devices are still in their infancy. For achieving these next steps, it is essential to bridge the areas of nanoparticle synthesis and supra-colloidal structure assembly on the one hand and the areas of structure-function studies and device-integration on the other hand. The central aim of the proposed RTG is to establish an educational framework to close the gap between the particulate materials world and the device world. To do so, we will keep a high level of disciplinary excellence of the students in the relevant fields, but complement it by a multi-disciplinary education concept towards basic and applied aspects of supra-colloidal structure self-assembly that will ensure strong communication across the disciplinary borders. We will thus create an awareness for the requirements and limitations that have to be met in order to make supra-colloidal structures applicable in devices and unlock their full potential. In terms of methodology, we will target the assembly and integration of supra-colloidal assemblies into devices using polymeric material approaches, applied physics and device engineering. To ensure success, an interdisciplinary training program will be provided to the students, all projects will be bridging between the materials and the device areas and address the generic challenges that will enable the step from materials to devices.
