he aim of this project proposal is the transfer of the results of the research project "Basic Experimental and Simulation-Supported Analysis of Surface Structuring for Short- and Long-Stroke Honing" to an industrial application. Based on the experimental findings of this project and by using results of a developed process simulation system, a prototypical microfinishing process for the adjustment of the shape of shaft heels is going to be designed. This process comprises a new tool concept, using honing stones with rhombic cut-outs. These tools are developed by the project partner ELGAN-Diamantwerkzeuge GmbH & Co. KG. In a cooperation between the Institute of Machining Technology (ISF) and the Chair of Computer Science XIV (LS XIV) of the TU Dortmund University, NAGEL Maschinen- und Werkzeugfabrik GmbH, ELGAN-Diamantwerkzeuge GmbH & Co. KG and Alicona lmaging GmbH, a fundamental analysis of this process will be carried out, applying the knowledge gained from the previous investigations. Further developments are required to achieve the project goals. In particular, the developed process model has to be adapted to the new process and the relevant process effects have to be taken into account. This includes the wear of the honing stones and the calculation of the specific process forces. Simulation runs will be carried out for various process parameter values and different shapes of the honing stones. Based on the experimental findings and the simulation results, the influence of the process and tool parameters on the resulting workpiece shape and topography of the workpiece surface will be analysed. Finally, a prototypic microfinishing process will be designed in order to achieve specific desired process results defined by the industrial project partners. This way, the applicability of the simulative approach for analysing and optimising microfinishing operations will be validated.
