Lattice tuning of the electronic properties of model high temperature superconductors

This project primarily address goal of this project is to provide a ‘smoking gun’ answer to one of the most debated issue of condensed matter physics, namely whether the strength of the magnetic interaction in the copper oxide high temperature superconductors controls their critical temperature. To do this, we propose to simultaneously investigate the superconducting and magnetic response of a family of model high temperature superconductors - the tetragonal single and bi-layered Hg-based cuprates - as their critical temperature is tuned by mean of external stress. In addition, the proposed methodology will allow us to address the question of the ubiquity of long-range 3D charge ordering in the cuprates and of their relationship to Fermi surface reconstruction, as well as to search for critical nematic fluctuations above the pseudogap temperature and thereby to critically examine the role of electronic nematicity in the phase diagram of the cuprates.
