Property Inequality in the Private Sphere: Couple-Internal and External Drivers of Change in Property Arrangements in Couple Relationships (B06)

Subject Area Empirical Social Research
Term since 2021
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 424638267

The potential structural change in property ownership in couple households is examined from a praxeological perspective. The focus is not only on the distribution of property between the partners but also on which practices and patterns of interpretation they establish in order to enable or restrict the disposal of property. As a result of this “doing property,” six types of couple-specific property arrangements were identified, which will be quantitatively validated in the second funding phase. In addition, the significance of internal and external drivers for changes in property arrangements in couples will be investigated using a longitudinal mixed-methods design. In this way, we systematically link the micro and macro perspectives on property as a category of inequality and gender research.
