The subject of project A05 is what happens to a property after the death of its owner and its independence in legal persons. The guiding research questions are whether inheritance law arose from property or vice versa and where the correct starting point for family and social ties can be found. The project explores the emergence of today’s understanding of foundations in the 19th century and the reasons for the foundation boom in Germany since the 1970s as well as the problems posed by property ties in the conception of “steward-ownership” in enterprises.
