Project Description

Contact heat transfer and heat conduction in packed beds of edged particles (Tsotsas) is focused on the DEM description of contact heat transfer. In FP2, the focus will be on polydisperse, multivariate systems of particles that differ in shape, thermal conductivity or size. The research starts with a homogenized property (effective thermal conductivity) and then studies its discrete counterpart (particle-particle heat transfer coefficient). Thermal equilibration experiments will be conducted with initially segregated fractions of hot and cold particles in a rotary drum to unveil the kinetics of contact heat transfer. The new model for particle-particle heat transfer will be transferred to another project and used for DEM/CFD.
