The biophysical research within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 1027 is a cornerstone of the international visibility of Saarland University, based on tight collaborations between experimental, theoretical, and computational research. To deepen the successful collaborative research in the following years, a wide range of computationally expensive simulations and numerical analyses are anticipated in fields such molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecules, stochastic transport proceses in cells and in vitro, migration of (cancer) cells, cell mechanics, protein expression patterns, and several others. The available computer cluster, purchased in 2013 and 2015, is insufficient for the anticipated calculations, and the age of the cluster leads to increasingly frequent hardware failures. Additional requirements for hybrid CPU/GPU server nodes stem from the appointment of Jochen Hub to the chair of theoretical biophysics in 2018. GPU-based molecular dynamics simulations will be partly used for research within the CRC 1027 and partly in the context of other national (CRC 860, CRC 803) and international collaborations (ITN "PROTON).
