The extraction of spectra from the two-dimensional detector data, and the subsequent computation of radial velocities and other high-level data products, form the basis of the scientific exploitation of CARMENES. Enhancements of the data reduction pipelines, and adaptations for applications such as transmission spectroscopy of the atmospheres of transiting planets, improve the performance of CARMENES and enable the realization of broader scientific goals. We intend to implement an advanced treatment of detector artefacts, optimize the spectral extraction through two-dimensional modeling of the instrumental point spread function, develop new algorithms for the correction of stellar activity and telluric contamination, enhance the sensitivity for faint targets through an on-chip binning option, and modify the observing procedures for transmission spectroscopy. These measures will help to keep CARMENES competitive with similar spectrographs that have recently become operational.
