Project Details
A Tephrostratigraphic Framework for the Atacama Desert and its Application on Different Sedimentary Archives (D06*)
Subject Area
Palaeontology
Term
from 2020 to 2024
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 268236062
The Subproject aims to develop the first comprehensive, regional tephrostratigraphic database (TephATA) for the Atacama. The TephATA database shall combine geochemical fingerprinting data (major, minor, trace elements) of available and new samples with chronological and stratigraphic information to correlate tephra layers between different sites and to identify widespread marker tephra horizons. Thereby, the TephATA database will provide the backbone to transfer ages known volcanic eruptions to visible tephra and non-visible cryptotephra layers in continental and marine archives of the CRC projects. Additional state-of-the-art dating of feldspars and zircons will refine the chronology of the tephra layers.
