Neural basis of modulators of expectation effects in pain and affective processing (A03)

Subject Area Human Cognitive and Systems Neuroscience
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 422744262

Project Description

Project A03 implemented an expectation modulation paradigm in combination with a Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) and discovered that oscillatory brain activity in the pre-stimulus phase contributes to expectation effects on pain. A03 will further investigate the neural underpinnings and modulatory effects of self-efficacy and control, which are thought to enhance the effects of positive expectation on pain processing and perception. Using virtual reality and BCI, the interactions between expectation and mood state as well as common and distinct mechanisms underlying expectation-induced pain and affective processing including generalization effects will be investigated.
