Final Report Abstract

Within the magnetotelluric (MT) project ElectricalSutureImage, three experiments from 2004 to 2006 were conducted along the 650 km Agulhas-Karoo traverse in South Africa and along a 75 km long parallel section 350 km farther east. The traverse crosses at least two major suture zones of different age and accretionary evolution as well as two of the world largest geophysical anomalies, the Beattie Magnetic Anomaly (BMA) and the Southern Cape Conductive Belt (SCCB). With the new high resolution MT data we are able to resolve structural details of the Earth’s crust: we can show that the MT data does not support the assumption that the magnetic and the conductivity anomaly have a common source, we are able to follow the conductivity anomaly located at the centre of the BMA along strike and resolve different depth extend and inclination, which indicates a segmentation of this fault zone.
