Atomic structure and composition of defect phases in Mg- and Ni-based systems (B01)

Subject Area Thermodynamics and Kinetics as well as Properties of Phases and Microstructure of Materials
Term since 2020
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 409476157

Project Description

Defect phases are described at the atomic scale by their structure, with different atoms occupying crystallographic sites according to thermodynamics at the defects. The aim of B01 is to experimentally decipher this structure by combining aberration-corrected S/TEM techniques including high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy. Specifically, B01 will work on 2D defect phases in Mg- and Ni-based systems, including surface oxides of Ni solid solutions and planar defects in intermetallic phases (e.g. μ-phase Nb7Ni6), as well as develop methods to detect (ordered) point defects using S/TEM.
