Project Details
Interaction of meridional ocean heat transports and regional processes in the Arctic Ocean (D04)
Subject Area
Oceanography
Term
since 2020
Project identifier
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 268020496
Warm water reaches the Arctic from lower latitudes. It increasingly melts sea ice from below and contributes to surface warming in winter. In phase II, we showed that a local dynamical feedback does not increase the amount of Atlantic Water flowing into the Arctic Ocean via Fram Strait and that Atlantic warm water increasingly reaches the ocean surface during winter in future climate model projections. In phase III, we will continue to study the effects of ocean heat transport on Arctic warming, with an increased focus on the role of ocean heat transport for atmospheric feedbacks.
