In this project, we wish to realize a novel concept for organic nanoparticle lasers. The goal is to understand the lasing behavior of composite organic-nanoparticle cavities combining plasmonic surface lattice resonances with distributed Bragg reflectors. In preliminary work, we have shown that embedding metal nanoparticles and organic emitters into microcavities allows to realize laser structures. Here, we wish to systematically study these novel structures. We wish to prepare novel highly defined noble metal nanoparticles with varied size and shape and assemble them into periodic structures which show surface lattice resonances. They will be combined with suitable organic materials and embedded in high-Q distributed Bragg reflector-based cavities to achieve excellent lasing properties and in particular highly photostable emission systems. In analogy to a photonic laser/distributed feedback laser (DFB), we plan to study the coherent energy transfer between surface lattice resonance (open cavity design/optical feedback by Bragg scattering) and gain material. Furthermore, we plan to explore mechanically tunable surface lattice resonances.
