Flash sintering of Perovskites

Subject Area Glass, Ceramics and Derived Composites
Term from 2020 to 2023
Project identifier Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) - Project number 436254098

Flash sintering is a novel route to densify ceramics. It utilizes additional electric voltage and current to foster the sintering process. In this project we will try to clarify the role of external electrodes, disentangle the different charge carriers, try to understand the influence of magnetic forces on densification, try to further understand the initiation phase of the Flash event, establish an overall Gibbs free energy function to describe the process, determine the modifications of functional ceramic properties (ferroelectric, magnetic, magnetoelectric and semiconducting) in comparison to classically sintered ceramics, try to devise an industrially applicable sample electroding and understand the influence of composite green bodies on the Flash process and their finally obtained structures and functionality. The additional influence of magentic fields will be investigated.
