Zusammenfassung der Projektergebnisse

The objective of this study is to determine the effect of flash drying of S. officinalis on colour, essential oil content and the antioxidant activity in the dried product as well as extracting and analysing the essential oil in the air/VOC-mixture. Tailoring of the essential oil profile of the dried plants and essential oil in the air/VOC-mixture as a function of drying temperature, airspeed and particle size is the fundamental research question. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic conditions changes to the proposed plan were undertaken. The project was extended for 6 months from the planned period with the scope for realizing the full experimental design. The experimental design conducted at the private company resulted to be effective for altering the drying methods of salvia officinalis and achieving variation of sample that could be compared to the fresh samples. Sun drying method reached lowest water content and highest VOC loos in the analysed samples, drying in direct sun is leading to quality loos of VOC. Chamber drying with through flow air direction shows best results compared with other drying methods. Highest oil content in the salvia plant material was recorded and lowest essential oil loos. Chamber drying methods enable the possibility to capture the drying air and condensing the VOC. Even though the project faced problems due to COVID-19 pandemic situation it was possible to analyses and simulate the desired experiments. Further research is needed to extract and quantify the VOC of drying air drying aromatic plants in controlled drying chamber increases the product quality and might introduce a new product of essential oil from the drying air.
