This project will investigate scale interaction processes between atmospheric convection and fronts in the midlatitudes. A combination of radar data, atmospheric reanalyses and experiments with a weather prediction model will be used to study the influence of the frontal environment on convective life cycles as well as the feedback of convection on the frontal evolution. The results from this empirical analysis will then be used as a basis for the development of a reduced theoretical model for frontal dynamics in a moist atmosphere using methods of multiscale asymptotics.
